Ten of the best Christmas episodes from our favourite TV shows
You don’t always have to stick to the classic Christmas movies - why not revisit your favourite Christmas episodes instead? There are so many great ones to choose from, but here’s our top ten.
How I Met Your Mother: How Lily Stole Christmas (Season 2, Episode 11)
Christmas isn’t exactly harmonious for our favorite New Yorkers. Ted and Lily get into a huge argument right before Lily finishes her famous Christmas decorations. To make matters worse, Marshall was really looking forwards to seeing these on Christmas Eve. Meanwhile, Robin has to take care of Barney, who is tied up in bed with a nasty cold. At the end of the episode, we learn that everything can be resolved by sharing a beer with your nearest and dearest.
Friends: The Christmas Armadillo (Season 7, Episode 10)
In this episode, Ross gets a spontaneous visit from his son and wants to surprise him disguised as Santa Claus. But, all of the Santa outfits are already out on loan, so he decides to dress up as the next best thing… an armadillo. Did you know that each episode of Friends took an average of five hours to film?!
Gilmore Girls: Forgive and Forget (Season 1, Episode 10)
Can you imagine not being invited by your mum at Christmas? This happens to Lorelai in this Christmas episode called "forgive and forget." So her daughter Rory goes to the big family party alone. And if that wasn’t bad enough – Lorelai's father, Rory’s grandpa, is taken to hospital. Fortunately, there is a happy ending, though, and Lorelai gets to spend Christmas with her family.
The Big Bang Theory: The Gift Hypothesis (Season 2, Episode 11)
You know the situation – a friend tells you that she’s bought a gift for you this year, even though you didn’t think to give her one. Now you have to get her a present too... but what? This is the exact predicament that Sheldon finds himself in when he finds out that Penny has bought a gift for him. Her gift turns out to be so special to him, that in return Sheldon gives her not only a variety of gift baskets, but one of his rare hugs too.
Grey's Anatomy: Holiday Blues (Season 6, Episode 10)
Grey's Anatomy’s Christmas shows that sadly Christmas is not always a time of peace and joy. While Doctor Webber fights against his alcohol addiction, Doctor Bailey has an argument with her father. In the end, however, Derek aka. McDreamy and Doctor Webber come to a truce. Fun Fact: Grey’s Anatomy was originally called "Complications".
Downton Abbey: A Request for Love (Season 2, Episode 9)
The best thing about Christmas at Downtown Abbey is undoubtedly the Christmas tree! In this special Christmas episode, there’s a particularly beautiful tree on the family’s Yorkshire estate. Despite the fact that this episode is full of drama, it ends on a really romantic note. Matthew overcomes his nerves and proposes to Mary for the second time – and this time she says yes! Just make sure you have some tissues to hand.
The O.C.: The Best Chrismukkah Ever (Season 1, Episode 13)
What happens if you celebrate Christmas and Hannukah at the same time? We find out in this Christmas episode when Seth invents a special “Chrismukkah" to bring his family and friends together. But, it’s anyone’s guess if this is enough to convince Ryan to come over, and if the family will actually stay together for Christmas despite anger and alcohol in excess. Yes, Christmas can be stressful sometimes. But the extended family from Modern Family raises the bar even higher in this Christmas episode. Right before Christmas, they realize that they can’t celebrate the festive period together this year. The only solution is to have a merry Christmas time in just four hours. One thing’s for sure, breakdowns are inevitable.
Scrubs: My Christmas Wonder (Season 1, Episode 11)
J.D., Turk & Co. celebrate Christmas at the Sacred Heart Hospital, as always. And in this Christmas episode, they help to make a Christmas miracle come true. Turk helps a woman in a park bring her tiny baby into the world. Did you know that Sacred Heart Hospital is a real hospital? During filming for this series, the abandoned building was brought back into action.
