#FridayFive: five watermelon recipes to try!
In the US, the 3rd of August is the day of the watermelon. We think this versatile fruit has earned a day of international commemoration, here are five reasons why.
You probably know the quote, "I carried a watermelon," from "Dirty Dancing". But have you tried these delicious watermelon recipes yet? Now's the time!
1. Watermelon BBQ style
As we already said in our friday five about barbecue, watermelon tastes delicious fresh from the barbecue. Here's how to do it, just season with onions, a little salt and curry powder and stick it on the grill. The smoky aroma combined with the sweet and refreshing flesh is a great combination that goes very well with goats' cheese.
2. Refreshing salad with watermelon and feta
Speaking of goats' cheese or feta, just add watermelon cubes, some crumbly white cheese, a little mint and mix up a balsamic dressing with a little salt and pepper for a phenomenally fresh summer salad. If you're still hungry, treat yourself to some slices of baguette or ciabatta with a little butter. Tastilicious!
And here's another idea, with the help of a few tomatoes, you can transform your watermelon into a sugo, which you can enjoy with a green leaf salad and mozzarella. On hot days we recommend trying our buffalo mozzarella with melon sugo from our current specials menu!
3. Watermelon soup with cucumber and tomatoes
Combining watermelon with other thirst quenching fruits and vegetables like cucumber or tomato means you can make a refreshingly cold soup with your watermelon. Do you want to know how? Simply purée the flesh of your watermelon, the cucumbers and the tomatoes with a little vinegar and olive oil – you decide how much to put in of each ingredient depending on the kinds of flavours and textures you like. Season with fresh, chopped herbs such as basil and parsley and put in the refrigerator until you're ready to serve. Yum!
4. Watermelon pizza: fruit salad 2.0
Do you love fruit salad? Then you'll love this watermelon pizza! To make it, simply cut a watermelon into round slices. Then cut the pieces into pizza slices and arrange them on a plate. Serve your "pizza" with fruits like blueberries, blackberries or cubed mangos as toppings! You can garnish your melon pizza with grated white chocolate and mint leaves or lemon balm leaves. This tastes great, looks great and is so easy to make! Are you interested in more ideas for serving fruit? Blogger Victoria has some tips for you!
5. Drink recipes with watermelon: meet "melodka" & "frosé"
We can't let you go without sharing our favourite recipes for watermelon drinks, because with or without alcohol the watermelon is a real asset to your summery bar. Looking to create some buzz at your next garden party? Cut a watermelon in half and and scrape out the pulp. Purée it and then add vodka. Put the mix back in the melon half and tada! Finish your fruity punch with the right glasses and you'll have happy guests in no time!
Looking for something a little less strong? Then mix two parts rosé, one part watermelon and finish with a bit of water, add some sugar, fresh mint and lemon juice. Freeze the drink for two to four hours. Stir before serving and garnish with mint leaves.
No alcohol for you? Then just remember this tip: The fruity watermelon is fantastic in almost every smoothie mix and – when put on ice – quenches your thirst perfectly. Cheers!
