New Year, new highlights – dates for your diary in 2018

The outlook for 2018 is rosy. It’s a year packed with exciting events including major music gigs, long awaited movie premieres and the iconic FIFA World Cup. Find out what else is happening in 2018. Happy New Year!

1. Bright, brighter, Vapiano’s Specials

Granted, our delicious Vapiano Specials don’t really count as a single event in 2018. But with a changing menu every few months, a visit to Vapiano is always a highlight. Try our colourful new selection of Specials available from January to April.

2. A fairytale wedding in May

The world watched on as Prince William and Kate tied the knot in 2011 and now it’s Harry’s turn. Wedding bells will chime in May and the big day is set to be one of 2018’s most talked about events.

3. We’ve been looking for David!

You say David Hasselhoff, we say “Baywatch”. Or “Knight Rider”. Or “Looking For Freedom” – the hit rumoured to have single-handedly brought down the Berlin Wall. Fans of Hasselhoff’s music are in for a treat with David scheduled to tour Germany in 2018.

4. Get your kicks here

Once you’ve warmed up your vocal chords singing along to the hits of Hasselhoff, you’ll be ready to cheer on your favourite team at the FIFA World Cup. The biggest sporting event of 2018 kicks off in June and is hosted by Russia.

5. I’m blue, da ba dee da ba dee

If sport’s not your thing, check out this new food trend set to be huge in 2018. May we present: the blue latte macchiato. Yes, you read that correctly. Chefs are now using edible algae to turn our favourite coffee blue. Don’t believe us? Head to Instagram and check out #bluelatte. We’re not convinced, so we’re saving bright food colours for our Specials menu instead.

6. The return of “13 Reasons Why”

Finally! After the first series of mystery teen drama “13 Reasons Why” had us hooked in 2017, the second season hits our screens in 2018. Grab the popcorn!

7. And the Oscar goes to...

On 4 March 2018, Los Angeles will be rolling out the red carpet for the 90th Academy Awards. This year’s Oscars will be presented by Jimmy Kimmel so laughter is guaranteed. We look forward to finding out who’s in the running when nominations are announced on 23 January 2018.

8. Girl power overload

Reckon “Ocean’s 8” will pick up an award at next year’s Oscars? With an all-female cast including big names like Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Rihanna, the movie packs a serious punch of girl power. Don’t miss the premiere in June.

9. Make space for new tech

The gaming community are eagerly anticipating the release of the new Atari console this spring. It’s been 25 years since the original Ataribox first burst onto the home video game scene. The new version will be driven by the Linux operating system and can play PC games.

10. Shape of Ed

Another artist due to tour in 2018 is Ed Sheeran. With concerts all over the world from Austria to Australia, fans everywhere can look forward to seeing the iconic British star live. However, many dates are already sold out so don’t hang about if you want tickets.

11. Super duper

Another date for your diaries is the 2018 Super Bowl on 4 February. This year, the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis plays host to America’s most watched sporting event. And if like us you don’t really understand the rules, you can look forward to Justin Timberlake performing at half-time.

12. As good as gold

What America does, we can do too! The “Goldene Kamera” awards are Germany’s answer to the Oscars and are awarded to both German and international nominees from the film and music industries. It’s hosted in Hamburg in February.

13. Happy birthday to you

A whole host of celebrities have big birthdays coming up this year. Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres turns sixty, and we’re sure Rihanna will have a few friends over for her thirtieth. Who wouldn’t want to be a fly on the wall at that party?!

14. Good things come in threes

The final episode of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy will be released in February 2018. Think it can top the $381 million the second part grossed last year?

15. Bring on the festival season

Already planning your next festival weekend? Although there’s no Glastonbury this year there are heaps of cool alternatives. Check out the star-studded line-ups for Germany’s “Rock am Ring” and Spain’s “Primavera Sound”, both from 1-3 June 2018.

16. Dark days

A total lunar eclipse will take place when the moon passes through the centre of the Earth’s shadow on 27 July 2018. It’s been seven years since the last central lunar eclipse so grab your camera and snap some weird ‘n’ wonderful pics.

17. Loud and proud

Christopher Street Day is Europe’s spin on Gay Pride and events take place throughout the summer. Look out for colourful parades in Hannover on 19 May, Munich on 14 July, Berlin on 28 July and Hamburg on 4 August.

18. Time to relax

What else we’re excited about in 2018? Days off work! New Year’s Day falls on a Monday and there are lots of other opportunities for an extended weekend in 2018. May Day is a Tuesday and Ascension Day falls on a Thursday meaning you only need take one day off for a long weekend break!
