Our delicious winter beverages for the run-up to Christmas

Are you counting down the days to Christmas with a piece of chocolate every day in your advent calendar? Or are you polishing your boots hoping old Saint Nick will fill them with goodies? However you celebrate the run-up to Christmas, take the time out to relax with some gingerbread and a mug of our delicious “White Apple” winter beverage.

When it’s cold outside, nothing beats hanging out at home with loved ones in keen anticipation of Christmas. Think gingerbread, mince pies and a steaming mug of mulled wine, hot chocolate or spiced fruit juice.

Many European countries celebrate Saint Nicolas on 6 December so to mark the occasion we’ve come up with “White Apple” – our own delicious winter beverage for you to make at home. Homemade baked apple syrup with hot frothy milk is sure to warm the cockles of your Christmas heart. And for a unique homemade gift, fill the baked apple syrup into flip-top bottles and garnish with a ribbon!

You will need:

For the baked apple syrup

·         750 ml apple juice

·         600 g cane sugar

·         20 ml lemon juice (bottled)

·         3 cinnamon sticks

·         1 star anise

·         1 vanilla pod

·         3 drops of bitter almond essence

·         1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

Optional: flip-top bottles to decant the syrup.

To make the drink:

·         250 ml hot milk

·         40 ml baked apple syrup

·         Chocolate powder to decorate

How to make the baked apple syrup

Add the apple juice, cane sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon sticks and star anise to a saucepan. Scrape out the vanilla pod and add both the pulp and the pod to the other ingredients.

Bring to a boil on a medium heat and simmer until the ingredients have a syrupy consistency. Add the bitter almond essence and ground cinnamon, stir well and pass the mixture through a sieve. Fill the hot syrup into flip-top bottles, close immediately and briefly stand upside down. Once the syrup has cooled, it can be kept for up to six days.

To make “White Apple” you will need around 40 ml of the baked apple syrup and 250 ml of hot, frothy milk. First pour the syrup into a tall glass before adding the hot milk and sprinkling with chocolate.

Why not take a break from your Christmas shopping by popping into your local Vapiano and sampling one of our three warming winter beverages. Hot Ginger Lemon is made with hot lemon, fresh ginger and honey, while the Hot Cinnamon Orange fuses hot orange juice, star anise, cinnamon and honey. Last but not least, our Eilles Rooibus Winter Punch is a fruity South African tea with ginger, apple, cinnamon, cardamom, coconut, black pepper and almond.

Who cares how cold it is when you’ve got one of those to sip on? Merry Christmas!
